Gene Linked Obesity Can Raise Dementia Risk PhotoOne finding was found by someone in Stockholm, Swedia. In this case, it has found about the information of the dementia risk. This discovery has found that the dementia risk also can be raised by the obesity. But, there are not all the people who can raise the dementia risk. It was the Gene linked. A variant of the obesity related gene thought can also increase or raise the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. This new study was conducted by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Swedia. In this study, there were about more than 1,000 Swedish people, aged 75 and older, who became the participants.

To do this observation, the participants have to be observed for nine years. The Karolinska Institute followed their developing in nine years. And they all underwent genetic testing at the start of the study. Based on the data of Karolinska Institute, Participants who carried an AA gene variant in the FTO gene had a 58 percent increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s and a 48 percent increased risk for dementia, compared to those without the variant. Even, the risk also can increase to the number of 100 percent higher for the people or a person who have the FTO-AA variant and a gene mutation called APOE4. As it is known that APOE is the highest risk variant of the known Alzheimer’s related gene.

According to the result, it was stated that the increase risk was independent of the traits previously associated with FTO, such as obesity and diabetes measured at baselin. On the other word, Dr. Caroline Graff and colleagues at the Karolinska Institute have stated that the mechanism of FTO in increasing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia can be different from the mechanism of FTO in increasing the risk for obesity. Meanwhile, in other place, Maria Carrilo, senior director of medical and scientific relations at the Alzheimer’s Association, said that it was a fascinating early finding, but it still needed to see there results confirmed by other researchers.
